What Is an Audiogram?

An audiogram is a graph that plots your hearing thresholds across a range of frequencies. It is the standard output of pure-tone audiometry and the universal language of hearing healthcare. Each point represents the softest sound you can detect at a given pitch, measured in decibels Hearing Level (dB HL).

How Does This Online Hearing Test Work?

This test uses the modified Hughson-Westlake adaptive threshold method, the same approach used in clinical audiology. You will hear tones at different pitches and volumes through your headphones. Each ear is tested independently at 8 standard frequencies (250-8000 Hz). The test uses warble tones (frequency-modulated tones) to reduce standing wave effects in your ear canal, following ISO 389-7 standards.

How Accurate Is an Online Hearing Test?

With proper calibration, this test provides results within approximately +/- 10-15 dB of clinical audiometry. This makes it useful for screening (identifying likely hearing loss) and pattern detection (seeing the shape of loss across frequencies). How do I read an audiogram?
An audiogram plots frequency (pitch) on the x-axis and hearing level in dB on the y-axis. Lower numbers (near the top) indicate better hearing. Red circles show right ear results; blue X marks show left ear results.
