Testimonials Aren’t Enough: Correlation Vs. Causation

Testimonials have a long a storied history in the world of marketing. Indeed, you’ll note that we display one on our landing page. For a variety of consumer products – say, for example, a type of cleaning agent – testimonials might be enough. They might sway you to make a purchase. However, in the field of medical therapy – testimonials are not enough. Testimonials alone shouldn’t convince you that a particular medical treatment is efficacious in treating tinnitus. Testimonials, which really amount to anecdotes (and this is assuming they’re even legitimate), are the lowest form of evidence available. The reason is that testimonials alone are inadequate to establish causation. What do I mean by that? I mean that testimonials are really nothing more than stories about correlations between events.

I did A, and then B happened. Therefore A causes B. (this is an incorrect conclusion)

The beauty of the scientific method is that experiments are designed to establish true causation. That’s why you have an experimental and a control group – you change only one variable between them, and if there’s a difference in outcomes, then you know it was caused by the variable. If you have the experimental group A, which only varies by one variable, C, compared to experimental group B, then any difference in outcome was caused by C.

Click here to see how Notched White Noise (WWN) was shown to have a superior tinnitus volume reduction compared to the control group, which was regular White Noise (WN).

Don’t buy a tinnitus treatment product just because you encounter some convincing testimonials. Check the evidence first.
