The AudioNotch Tinnitus Treatment Blog
The Importance of Hope
It’s not surprising that tinnitus can trigger or induce depression. There are many anecdotal reports of the onset of depression following the acquisition of tinnitus, and multiple studies show an association between the two – although it is not necessarily clear which way the causality lies. There are even tragic anecdotal reports of individuals committing suicide – driven mad by their tinnitus. And of course, there’s the famous story of Van Gogh cutting off his ear in an effort to alleviate his own tinnitus.
For many of these individuals, the most difficult thing is dealing with a perceived absence of hope. We believe that AudioNotch is an effective tinnitus therapy and can significantly reduce tinnitus volume, and the suffering that it causes. However, it doesn’t work for everyone with tinnitus – for example, individuals who are deaf or who have severe hearing loss will not benefit. Additionally, it is a treatment – not a cure. The ultimate hope for all tinnitus sufferers is a total cure that completely eliminates tinnitus.
My message for any of you who are suffering from depression related to your tinnitus is as follows:
No matter what, don’t give up hope. You have a reason to hope.
There are many researchers working on a total cure for tinnitus. Science progresses forward, and as our knowledge increases, so too does our capacity to treat illness. The strides we’ve made in the last twenty years alone in molecular biology, medicine, and related fields are astonishing. It is not unreasonable to expect a total cure in our lifetime. Here is but one among many stories about upcoming research approaches.
That said, a cure is not the only reason for hope. Hope isn’t just a belief that things will get better – it’s an attitude. There may be some individuals whose tinnitus will be treatment refractory during their entire lives. For them, a reorienting of their attitude, an acceptance of their situation – this type of psychological adaptation is what will produce the greatest decrease in suffering. It sounds like a platitude coming from a blog post on the internet, but I speak from a place of sincerity. Meditation may be one tool that can help you if you are in this situation.
Best,
