A professor in the UK has discussed some of the challenges in providing comprehensive tinnitus care to patients:

Professor Berthold Langguth, a leading researcher on tinnitus, visited Gibraltar this week to give a series of lectures and advise the health sector on tinnitus.

In an interview with the Chronicle Professor Langguth spoke about the need to establish an effective organisational framework for tinnitus patients as well as spreading awareness.

“It can be a really disabling condition and the treatment options are still very limited.”

He said that one patient from Gibraltar flew to Germany for tinnitus treatment and visited his clinic, subsequently keeping in contact.

Professor Langguth said that a new organisational framework for tinnitus patients which could be established in Gibraltar is a real possibility.

“I think the intention was that I provide some advice on how this could be realised as it is doable and requires only a reasonable amount of resources.”

Professor Langguth believes that we should try to improve the facilities and care of tinnitus. However, he claimed that this would be difficult as there is no particular treatment which is more effective on the majority of tinnitus patients.

In order to get round this the professor said that the implementation of an infrastructure to offer diagnosis of tinnitus and to provide different treatment options is necessary.
