A lot of people are puzzled by the fact that even though two individuals may have the same level of hearing loss, some people will develop tinnitus and others will not. This suggests that people may have different underlying levels of vulnerability to developing tinnitus. Interesting news on new tinnitus therapy research: a study has been approved in Texas to test the efficacy of vagal nerve therapy (which we’ve written about before) with respect to tinnitus treatment.
The therapeutic approach developed at UT Dallas pairs audible tones with brief pulses of electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve. Preclinical tests demonstrated that this approach “rewires” damaged brain circuitry associated with tinnitus, potentially yielding long-term reversal of symptoms. No device-related adverse events were seen in the initial human safety study conducted in Belgium, and the initial results were encouraging.*

There’s a great deal of noise exposure in certain lines of work. Unsurprisingly, a lot of anecdotal evidence suggests an increased risk of tinnitus among airline pilots. Pilots are routinely exposed to extremely loud noise from the function of their aircraft engines. As such, they often suffer noise induced hearing loss, and consequent to this hearing loss, oftentimes develop tinnitus in the frequency spectrum of hearing loss. For some individuals, it appears as if tinnitus can precipitate some very serious mental illnesses such as severe depression, which may unfortunately culminate in suicide:
Of 9,000 patients who have come to the tinnitus clinic at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, clinic director Billy Martin said he was aware of eight who committed suicide. Most of the patients show up with insomnia, anxiety and depression, along with their tinnitus.

Add another casualty to the list of musicians felled by tinnitus secondary to noise-induced hearing loss:
Noel Gallagher has revealed that he is suffering from tinnitus, having recently being diagnosed with the condition by doctors.

The condition, which is characterised by ringing in the ears in the absence of external sound, affects a number of musicians with loud music often causing damage over a number of years. Both Chris Martin of Coldplay and The Who’s Pete Townshend are sufferers.
