Why Do Some People Develop Tinnitus After Hearing Loss and Others Do Not? (part 2)
A lot of people are puzzled by the fact that even though two individuals may have the same level of hearing loss, some people will develop tinnitus and others will not. This suggests that people may have different underlying levels of vulnerability to developing tinnitus. We’ve posted about research in the past that confirms this, and a new paper has come out that details another possible explanation.
In this model, predisposition to tinnitus occurs as follows:
Here we for the first time compare behavioral and neurophysiological data from hearing impaired Mongolian gerbils with (T) and without (NT) a tinnitus … Continue Reading

New Vagal Nerve Therapy for Tinnitus Study Approved
Interesting news on new tinnitus therapy research: a study has been approved in Texas to test the efficacy of vagal nerve therapy (which we’ve written about before) with respect to tinnitus treatment.
The therapeutic approach developed at UT Dallas pairs audible tones with brief pulses of electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve. Preclinical tests demonstrated that this approach “rewires” damaged brain circuitry associated with tinnitus, potentially yielding long-term reversal of symptoms. No device-related adverse events were seen in the initial human safety study conducted in Belgium, and the initial results were encouraging.*
Vagal Nerve Therapy is one of … Continue Reading
Tinnitus and Pilots: A Study Shows Increased Risk
There’s a great deal of noise exposure in certain lines of work. Unsurprisingly, a lot of anecdotal evidence suggests an increased risk of tinnitus among airline pilots. Pilots are routinely exposed to extremely loud noise from the function of their aircraft engines. As such, they often suffer noise induced hearing loss, and consequent to this hearing loss, oftentimes develop tinnitus in the frequency spectrum of hearing loss. Despite efforts to protect the hearing of pilots, these efforts appear to be largely unsuccessful. A study confirms the association between being a pilot and acquiring tinnitus:

Frequent or constant tinnitus can … Continue Reading

ABC News On the Anecdotal Association Between Tinnitus and Suicide
For some individuals, it appears as if tinnitus can precipitate some very serious mental illnesses such as severe depression, which may unfortunately culminate in suicide:
Of 9,000 patients who have come to the tinnitus clinic at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, clinic director Billy Martin said he was aware of eight who committed suicide. Most of the patients show up with insomnia, anxiety and depression, along with their tinnitus.
“The combination is extremely difficult to deal with,” he said. “The load this places on people is beyond what any human was designed to endure.”
This combination of … Continue Reading
